Current Practice
Dr. Curtis E. Harris is the Chief of Endocrinology for the Chickasaw Indian Nation
and Director of the Chickasaw Nation Diabetes Care Center. Prior to his current
position, he was in private practice as an Endocrinologist in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma for more 25 years, with a speciality of Diabetology. He has been President
of the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Diabetes Association; and in 1998,
was the first physician in Oklahoma to receive the American Diabetes Association
Physician Excellence Award, with Distinction. In 2004, he was appointed by
the Governor of Oklahoma to the Oklahoma Medical Licensure Board, in recognition
of his work on improving clinical excellence and quality assurance in Oklahoma.
Medical Education, Training and Experience
Dr. Harris received a Masters in Biochemistry (Summa Cum Laude) from the University
of Washington in Seattle, Washington in 1969, during which time he worked with
Drs. Fisher and Krebs (“The Krebs Cycle”) on a project for which
they received the Nobel Prize in 1998. After receiving a National Institutes
of Health MD/PhD Career Fellowship Grant in 1969, he obtained his Medical Degree
from the University of Washington 1973. He was recognized as the outstanding
medical school graduate in his class, and was the first recipient of the Medical
Faculty Award for academic excellence in medicine and medical education. Dr.
Harris completed a Residency in Internal Medicine in Seattle in 1976, and a Fellowship
in Endocrinology at the University of Iowa in 1978.
Legal Education and Experience
Later in his career, he received a Juris Doctorate from the Oklahoma City University
School of Law in 1994. He graduated first in his class and received the Oklahoma
Bar Association’s Award for Excellence. He is Adjunct Professor of
Law at the Oklahoma City University School of Law, and a specialist in medical
law. He was the lead medical expert in the Tobacco Litigation Cases in Oklahoma,
and has provided medical-legal consultations for more than 200 physicians
in the areas of malpractice liability, Medicare, and HIPAA.
Public Speaking and Publications
Dr. Harris is widely published in the areas of Biochemistry, Endocrinology,
Law and Medical-Legal Ethics. He has lectured throughout the United States
on issues of medicine and law, and has been a guest on the Oprah Winfrey
Show, Good Morning America, the Today Show and National Public Radio. He
is a Peer Review Editor of the journal Issues in Law and Medicine.
